There is a particular quality to British crime fiction at its best, a sense that beneath the surface of civilised life - in country house hotels and quiet dining rooms throughout the ordered corridors of respectability - something has gone very wrong indeed. Claire Chase, Betty Rowlands and Elizabeth George understand this instinctively. In England, the most dangerous places are often the most comfortable-looking ones!

Ian Rankin is always a good read but it is interesting to have one of his other series which shows a different style and for me the best read in the selection.
