There is a particular chill in discovering that the locked door was never the problem, and that the places we consider safe contain palpable threats. A nervous Londoner swaps flats with a cousin she has yet to meet, a dying billionaire goes looking for children he never knew, a carer climbs the stairs of a crumbling Maine mansion and a small-town police station turns into a trap. Draw the curtains and check the latch!
Peter Swanson, 'Her Every Fear' - Still shaken by an ex-boyfriend's attack, Kate Priddy swaps her London flat for her cousin Corbin's Beacon Hill apartment, only to learn the woman next door has been murdered.
Linwood Barclay, 'Find You First' - Told he has Huntington's disease, tech billionaire Miles Cookson tracks down the nine children he fathered as a sperm donor, but someone else has the list and is getting there first.
Riley Sager, 'The Only One Left' - Maine, 1983: carer Kit McDeere is sent to Hope's End to look after Lenora Hope, mute and wheelchair-bound, who was suspected of murdering her family in 1929 and now wants to tell her story.
Karin Slaughter, 'Indelible' - Two gunmen open fire in the Heartsdale police station, leaving Chief Jeffrey Tolliver badly wounded and Sara Linton trapped with a class of schoolchildren, as a crime from twelve years ago returns to haunt them.
