The Second World War tested women in a multitude of ways. In this set, we see a Yorkshire matriarch open her home, Raven Hall, to the RAF. Two Liverpool friends see everything they have worked for threatened by bombing and separation. A wife who fought her way into an unwelcoming family witnesses events scatter everyone she loves. A WAAF plotter's marriage is further strained before her husband takes to the skies again. Different lives, different regions with one question in common: how do you hold on to what matters?

Ian Rankin is always a good read but it is interesting to have one of his other series which shows a different style and for me the best read in the selection.
