Martina Cole doesn't write comfortable crime fiction. She writes about the world as it actually exists for some people - the estates, the violence, the fierce loyalties, the women who hold everything together while the men around them burn it down. No one in British crime fiction writes with quite the same raw honesty and sheer narrative drive. She has sold over fifteen million books in the UK alone, and every one of those readers knows exactly why. These three novels showcase Cole at her most compelling - urgent and utterly impossible to put down.

Ian Rankin is always a good read but it is interesting to have one of his other series which shows a different style and for me the best read in the selection.
